Types of Seamless Steel Pipes:

By material:

Low‑carbon steel seamless pipes: Made from steels such as 10 or 20, these pipes are commonly used for water, oil and gas pipelines because they offer good corrosion resistance and efficient flow.

Medium‑carbon steel seamless pipes: Using steels such as 45 or 40cr, they provide higher strength and toughness, making them suitable for mechanical parts in vehicles and tractors.

Low‑alloy structural steel seamless pipes: Grades like 16mn and 5mnv offer excellent welding performance and load‑bearing capacity, so they are used in bridges and buildings.

Alloy steel seamless pipes: Pipes made from alloy steels (e.g., 40cr, 30crmnsi, 45mn2) have high hardness and wear resistance and are used in critical components such as gears and shafts.

Stainless steel seamless pipes: These pipes contain chromium, nickel or molybdenum; they resist corrosion and are widely used in the food, pharmaceutical and chemical industries.

By production process:

Hot‑rolled seamless pipes: Typically used for large‑diameter, thick‑walled pipes; the billet is heated and processed at high temperature.

Cold‑rolled seamless pipes: Cold rolling provides precise dimensions and smooth surfaces, making these pipes suitable for high‑precision applications.

Cold‑drawn seamless pipes: Producing thin‑walled pipes with tight tolerances, cold drawing is ideal for hydraulic systems or machinery requiring accurate dimensions.

Advantages of Seamless Steel Pipe:

Increased pressure ratings

The greatest advantage of seamless steel pipes is their increased ability to withstand pressure. Because a seamless steel pipe has not been welded, it doesn’t have that seam, which makes it equally strong around the entire circumference of the pipe. Besides, it is also much easier to determine pressure calculations without being required to take weld quality into consideration.

Uniformity of shape

Seamless steel pipe is a continuous extrusion of the alloy, meaning that it will have a round cross section that you can count on, which is helpful when you’re installing pipes or adding fittings.

Strength under loads

This type of pipe has greater strength under loading. Empty pipe must always support its own weight, but when a pipe is filled with material–or under load–it must also support that weight as well. Pipe failures and leaks in welded pipes usually occur at the welded seam. But because seamless pipe doesn’t have that seam, it isn’t subject to those failures.

Applications for Seamless Steel Pipe:

Bearing piles

When used as bearing piles, seamless steel pipe is an incredibly effective means of carrying as well as supporting loads from heavy structures. Seamless steel pipe can be filled with concrete to enhance its strength when used as bearing piles.

Pipe casing

During the construction of drilled shafts, either permanent or temporary pipe casing is needed, which is where seamless steel pipe can come in handy. Seamless steel pipe is able to support the hole during construction while concrete and cage are applied.

Combi walls

Seamless steel pipe can be used to create combi walls, which are retaining wall structures. Seamless steel pipe is used as the king pile in combi wall construction in conjunction with steel sheet piles. The pipe supports most of the load while sheet pile assists in transferring the load to both the soil and the king pile. Combi wall design eliminates transfer of shear forces across the interlock of the system.

Structural sections

When used for structural sections, seamless steel pipe is a great choice because it offers an equal amount of bending strength in all directions, which makes it resistant to buckling. Its resistance to buckling enables it to handle significantly heavier loads for exceptional lengths. The employment of seamless steel pipe as structural sections is particularly useful for big, open structures as well as cofferdams.

Underground utilities

Jacked and bored seamless steel pipe is an excellent choice in aiding in the installation of underground utilities. When used in this manner, a section of steel pipe is typically driven with the use of hydraulic jacks in between excavations. Then, a subsequent section of pipe is spliced to attach to the first section, and the pipe is subjected to cleaning out to make space for safe and efficient utility installation. When used for underground utilities in this way, disruption to nearby areas, specifically roads and businesses, is minimized.

How to Order Seamless Steel Pipe:

When ordering steel pipe, several key pieces of information need to be specified to ensure you receive the right product for your application:

Material: Specify the material grade, such as carbon steel (A106 or A53), alloy steel (A335), stainless steel (A312), or nickel alloy (B444). If a specific grade is required, like 316L stainless or Grade B carbon steel, make sure to include that.

Size: Specify the nominal pipe size (NPS) and the wall thickness as a schedule (Sch) or in inches or millimetres. For example, "NPS 6 Sch 40" or "NPS 12 with 0.375 inch wall."

Length: Specify the length requirements, such as single random (SRL), double random (DRL), or specific cut lengths. If you need exact lengths, provide a cut sheet with the quantity of each length required.

End finish: Specify how the pipe's ends should be finished, such as plain end (PE), bevelled end (BE), threaded (TE), threaded and coupled (T&C), or grooved. If different ends are needed, specify each, like "BE one end, TE other end."

Quantity:

Specify the total quantity required in pieces or feet. If you have multiple sizes or lengths, provide a breakdown of the amount for each item.

Testing and certification:

If any specific testing or certification is required, such as a mill test report (MTR), material test report (MTR), or positive material identification (PMI), make sure to include that in your order.

Delivery:

Specify the required delivery date and the shipping address. If you have any special offloading or receiving requirements, make sure to communicate those to the our.

FAQ

Q: What are steel seamless pipes?

A: Steel seamless pipes are cylindrical hollow tubes made without any welded joints, manufactured using a solid billet that is heated and then stretched over a form. These pipes offer superior strength, uniformity, and corrosion resistance, making them ideal for high-pressure and high-temperature applications across various industries such as oil & gas, power plants, and petrochemicals.

Q: What are the main uses of seamless pipes?

A: Seamless pipes are widely used in industries requiring high performance and reliability under pressure. Common uses include oil and gas transportation, steam pipelines, power generation, chemical processing, automotive components, and structural applications in construction. Their ability to withstand extreme temperatures and pressures makes them essential in critical systems.

Q: What is the difference between seamless and welded pipes?

A: The key difference is in manufacturing. Seamless pipes are made from a solid billet, offering no seam or joint, resulting in higher pressure tolerance and uniform strength. Welded pipes are made by rolling and welding steel plates or strips, which may make them more cost-effective but less suitable for high-pressure or critical applications due to the seam.

Q: Why are seamless pipes preferred for high-pressure applications?

A: Seamless pipes are free from welds and joints, eliminating weak points where failures might occur under pressure. Their consistent structure and higher mechanical strength make them ideal for high-pressure and high-temperature environments such as steam systems, boilers, and hydraulic lines in industrial applications.

Q: Are seamless pipes more durable than welded pipes?

A: Yes, seamless pipes are generally more durable due to their uniform structure and absence of welds, which eliminates the risk of seam failure. This makes them more reliable for critical uses where safety and performance are non-negotiable, such as in nuclear power plants, oil refineries, and gas transmission.
