Preventive Measures For Cold Brittleness Of Seamless Carbon Steel Pipes

Oct 15, 2024

Addition of alloy elements
Adding chromium element: Chromium element can change the crystal structure of seamless carbon steel pipes, enhance their ability to resist low-temperature brittle fracture, thereby improving their toughness in low-temperature environments and helping to prevent the occurrence of cold brittleness.
Incorporating molybdenum element: Molybdenum element has a positive effect on the low-temperature toughness of seamless carbon steel pipes. It can optimize the microstructure of the pipes to a certain extent, improve their performance at low temperatures, and reduce the possibility of cold brittleness.
Addition of titanium element: The addition of titanium element can improve the low-temperature performance of seamless carbon steel pipes, which helps to enhance their ability to resist brittleness at low temperatures and prevent cold brittleness.

Optimization of Heat Treatment Process
Refine grain size
Through reasonable heat treatment, the grain size of seamless carbon steel pipes can be refined. For example, using heat treatment methods such as normalizing can improve the strength and toughness of steel pipes, thereby reducing their tendency towards cold brittleness.
The special heat treatment process of sub temperature quenching also helps to improve the low-temperature toughness of seamless carbon steel pipes and reduce the occurrence of cold brittleness.
Control heating and cooling rates
During the heating process, raise the temperature at an appropriate speed to avoid being too fast or too slow. Excessive speed may cause a large temperature difference between the inside and outside of the steel pipe, resulting in thermal stress; Being too slow may affect production efficiency and hinder the achievement of an ideal organizational structure.
When cooling, it is also necessary to control the speed and choose suitable cooling media, such as oil cooling or air cooling, to ensure that the structure of seamless carbon steel pipes is transformed reasonably during the cooling process and reduce the hidden danger of cold brittleness.

Improve the purity of steel
Impurities such as phosphorus and sulfur in seamless carbon steel pipes have adverse effects on their cold brittleness. Strictly controlling the content of these impurity elements in the production process, improving the purity of steel, can reduce the cold brittleness temperature, enhance low-temperature toughness, and effectively prevent the occurrence of cold brittleness.
